Although we try not to think of any disasters happening to us, the truth of the matter is that they do occur and they disrupt the lives of thousands of people every single year. The knock on effects can be huge as many people can be injured or killed and property damage can be extensive. To help protect yourself to a certain degree it is important to have disaster survival info so that you can try to minimize the potential problems that may be inflicted.

As a general rule, state governments should have a well put together disaster management plan and emergency teams on standby. If the disaster is very severe then it may not be possible for anybody to rescue you and your loved ones immediately. Therefore it makes sense to be both mentally and physically prepared for any eventualities that may arise. The first step is to draw up your own household disaster plan.

1. To be well prepared you need to be aware of what the potential disasters are in your locality. If there is an emergency management office in your town or city then they should be able to inform you about the chances of specific natural disasters. Also they should be willing to tell you about any chemical or nuclear hazards that are nearby. If terrorism is a concern of yours then they will be able to offer you some advice in this area.

2. If you have concerns about the welfare of your children if a disaster were to strike, then you can talk to their school authorities about what disaster plan they have in place. This also can be spoken about with your employer.

3. Talk to all the people in your household about what should be done in particular disaster scenarios, this needs to include a route and plan for evacuation.

4. Make sure that every member of your family understands the best way to get in contact with each other if a disaster separates you. It makes good sense to decide upon two meeting points, one of which should be in your neighborhood or block, and the other out of town.

5. Choose a relative or friend from outside your area who all the family members can contact in emergency if the phone lines are still working.

6. It can help to visualize two escape routes from every room in your house, make sure everybody agrees that these are the quickest and safest routes.

7. Create a list of emergency phone numbers and store it in a safe place that everyone is aware of. It is also very important that your children know who to contact or go to if you cannot reach your home.

8. Every adult living in your home should be aware of how and when to turn off the gas, water, and electricity. It is often the situation that even the home owner does not know where the main switches and stops are.

9. In any form of disaster there are going to be people who get hurt. For this reason it is very wise to undertake a brief first aid course. These are organised most weeks in towns up and down the country.

10. Make an extensive first aid kit and keep it in a location in which everybody is aware of. It needs to contain bandages, water purification tablets, antibiotics, iodine, painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anti-septic ointment.
